Hot Tub Moving and Hot Tub Installation

Preparation of Site

The first step after the purchase of your hot tub is to make an appointment with The Spa Guys for proper hot tub moving and hot tub installation or spa moving and spa installation .

It’s imperative that your hot tub be set up on a level area with easy access to a garden hose and electricity. One of our skilled technicians will look at your yard and help you decide the best spot to place your hot tub. We will also be able to identify the electrical requirements of your hot tub, and we can work with our sister company Franklin Electric to make any necessary adjustments to the wiring and connection to the hot tub panel.

Schedule your installation with us and we’ll not only get everything connected but we’ll evaluate your hot tub’s performance, fill it, balance your chemicals and give you an orientation if necessary.

Tips on setting up your hot tub, Jacuzzi, or Spa Tub

Level ground

Most professionals will agree that a concrete foundation is best for your Jacuzzi, spa, or hot tub. The solid support means that delivery, maintenance and even repairs are a little easier. But if you don’t have a concrete slab and you don’t want to pour one, decks can also provide a nice level surface. Occasionally, some yards are level enough even without concrete or a deck but be sure to confirm with a professional. The Spa Guys are happy to provide installation services to help you decide on the best possible placement of your hot tub and help you with any work you might need preformed.

Width of Gates and Doors

In the excitement of anticipating the arrival of the new hot tub, not everyone remembers to make sure that their yard is accessible for delivery. Be sure to measure all door and gates to confirm that the hot tub will fit through. If not, there are other delivery options you can consider, such as crane delivery or simply the temporary removal of a part of your gate.

Prepare an Area for Your Hot Tub

While booking a professional maintenance and cleaning service is very helpful, it’s also important to prepare an appropriate area for your hot tub. We recommend choosing an area away from trees or bushes if possible, or that you remove any low hanging branches. These tips help to avoid a lot of unwanted debris. Take all these things into consideration when setting up your spa!

Installation

All of the steps are important for hot tub moving and hot tub installation or spa moving and spa installation involves integrating the main house panel with a 50 or 60 amp breaker. Whether 50A or 60A is required depends on the number of pumps and size of heater in the spa. For most exterior spas, we run a 4-wire number 6 or number 8 wire to the spa location.  The size of the wire to be used is determined by the maximum current draw of the hot tub, the length of the wire run and the NEC or local codes and use thermoplastic nylon (THHN) insulated copper wire, never aluminum.

A Duck Box is placed within 10 feet of the spa, but no closer than 5 feet, a GFCI or ground fault circuit interrupter and manual disconnect/shutoff will be installed depending on local code requirements. The Duck Box with GFCI provides a safety shutoff near the spa. In the case of GFCI tripping, it is easier to troubleshoot when installed near the spa as well.

The GFCI installed in this exterior spa panel (Duck Box) that is used for hot tubs is of the 4 wire type.  It contains a ground and a neutral since many spas have 110v components built in to them that require a neutral wire. Not all spas operate on 4-wires, and many older spas only had 3 wire service. Never connect a 4-wire hot tub to 3-wire service.  Other spa brands such as Hot Springs may require 2 independent lines which would then require 2 separate GFCIs as per their own instructions.

This type of conduit needs to be buried at a minimum depth of 6 inches for metal and 18 inches for nonmetallic conduit. The combination of rigid PVC conduit combined with short length of flexible is used as code permits.
