Sanitizing your tub is very important for your safety and to maximize the lifespan of your tub. However, there are a variety of options to maintain your tub without chemicals - which can overall amplify the benefits of a cedar tub:

• Hydrogen peroxide is a great way to sanitize your tub, as it separates the water and oxygen, effectively killing all of the other harmful things like bacteria. Make sure you use 27% solution, of which you can find in pool or hot tub stores under shock or oxidizer treatments. Using gloves, put 1/3 cup of hydrogen peroxide for every 100 gallons, and 1/8 per 100 for everyday maintenance before people go in, making sure to wait a couple of minutes.

• Ozone generators can be another way for cedar tubs to be sanitized. They work by generating small ozone bubbles that kill bacteria in a similar fashion as hydrogen peroxide. Despite this, it is important to note that if you are not dumping and filling your tub as often, this solution has a hard time killing all of the bacteria on the cedar walls. So, a peroxide product is often needed every so often in conjunction.

As for daily maintenance, make sure you check the pH levels every so often before using to make sure it is safe to get in. Clean the filters to ensure their longevity using a garden hose, and replacing every few months/ year. If a ring forms around your tub use a mix of water and bleach or your peroxide cleaner with soft scrub brush and scrub it off. A Spa Guy tip: It would be best to do this every time you dump your tub to get in all of the nooks and crannies while the tub is emptied!

To keep your cedar tub looking new, you may want to restain it using wood stain. Make sure to follow manufacturers instructions and to find a stain that would work with a cedar tub. Also, you want to make sure you are checking you tub every month for damage to the wood or leaking on the outside and check on the inside that things look as they should.
